Registered Nurse (RN) – Corrections Travel Position

Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: 3×12 Nights
Pay: $2,012.40/week (plus $2,500 completion bonus per contract, up to $7,500 after three contracts)

Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Registered Nurse (RN) for a 13-week travel assignment in a correctional facility located in Estancia, NM. The RN will plan and provide comprehensive nursing care for inmates/residents, ensuring the highest standards of safety, confidentiality, and quality of care. Responsibilities include administering medications, assisting with examinations and treatments, performing emergency interventions, and supervising support staff to maintain consistent and compliant healthcare delivery within the facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver nursing care in accordance with established medical policies, facility guidelines, and scope of licensure.
  • Administer medications, treatments, and immunizations accurately while maintaining required documentation.
  • Assist Licensed Independent Providers (LIPs) during examinations and procedures; prepare examining rooms and necessary equipment.
  • Operate pill call, manage medication dispensing, and document all actions per policy.
  • Conduct assessments of new or ill inmates/residents, provide emergency care, and coordinate referrals to outside healthcare facilities as needed.
  • Monitor inmates/residents admitted to outside hospitals to support early and appropriate release planning.
  • Supervise and guide LPN/LVN and unlicensed medical staff in providing quality nursing care.
  • Observe and record inmate/resident behavior; maintain accurate, timely documentation of medical services provided.
  • Inspect the medical unit regularly for potential contraband and ensure the secure storage and disposal of supplies.
  • Promote health education and counseling individually and in groups as needed.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of all medical records and sensitive health information.
  • Collaborate with the Health Service Administrator (HSA) to review medical files, prepare operational reports, and ensure compliance with NCCHC, ACA, and JCAHO accreditation standards.
  • Support and uphold facility security, respond effectively to emergencies, and comply with all correctional and corporate safety policies.

Qualifications

  • Active RN license in New Mexico or a compact state.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with a degree or diploma in nursing.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of professional nursing experience, preferably in a correctional or acute-care setting.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications (additional facility-required certifications as applicable).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination and recent tuberculosis test.
  • U.S. Citizenship required for clearance (may start with ICE clearance pending).
  • Strong clinical, assessment, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently, maintain composure in high-stress environments, and apply sound judgment within correctional healthcare standards.
